realist tapestry of organised crime with five interwoven narratives, set in southern Italy.

the title’s biblical reference to a place notorious for vice & corruption stains each character, seen through unadorned, documentary proximity: ego, ritual, business without remorse, murder without glamour, actors who don’t act (many amateurs from Naples were cast). often hard to keep up with what’s happening; felt like extensive world-building without a clear protagonist’s path to tie it together. perhaps that chaos, though, is a more accurate reflection, great journalism rather than great film, of everyday crime in contrast with sensational gangster films.
