journal — thirteen
Hello,
I tried, but this week isn’t a writing-about-things week. I finished writing nan’s eulogy, planned some time to update my to do & trello, but mostly just drifted. The funeral is Thursday — I’ve nothing to ‘do’ for it, but my mind feels elsewhere, even when I know culture is what distracts me best.
A few things did pop up, which I’ll share before bed.

There’s this:
Horror podcast. Executive producer is Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us, Nope). Tells the story of a disgraced radio host who finally gets his chance to reinvent himself by chronicling the cold-case disappearance of several Muslim teens from Staten Island — a group he himself disparaged — in the wake of 9/11. His ill-considered investigations bring him face-to-face with an ancient American evil that's ready to offer him a monstrous bargain. I’m hooked, halfway through the series. Really utilises sound, which sounds obvious, but most really don’t bother. Great fun for dark walks.
There’s this:
On the night of Christ’s arrest, Peter was questioned about whether he knew Jesus. Three times he denied that he knew him, but later he bitterly regretted his denial and repented, shown above. It was mentioned while reading Waiting for the Last Bus by Richard Holloway in the context — sadness is unavoidable, but we make conscious, redeeming decisions every day that we should try to allow morals to guide us in. I think that was the point — I haven’t stared at the face long enough to check yet. Either way, it’s another painting that makes me want to understand paintings better.
& there’s this:
This painting was the first & only private viewing I’ve had, at Tate Britain. I’ll hunt down my notes from the hour I sat with it, but it’s Dunstanburgh Castle from the South by Turner. It was a sketch of his, before doing the ‘proper version’, and I liked it mostly because of that: the working out, the two-tone, still evokes a lot of bleakness, movement.
